Revealed ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut, the all-new Volvo V60 is the estate version of the recently launched 2011 S60 sedan. Aimed almost squarely at European buyers as Volvo projects that "no less than 90 percent" of the annual V60 production of 50,000 cars will find a home in Europe, the sporty-looking estate model will go on sale this fall.Volvo describes the low slung V60 as a sports wagon with a coupe-like roofline. "The typical sports wagon customer is an S60 buyer who would like some extra space and flexibility, but without the slightest compromise on sporty design and exciting driving properties," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell.

However, Volvo's focus on looks come with a cost as the V60's boot space is a mere 430 liters with the rear seats up. That's compared to 460lt of the BMW 3-Series Touring, 485lt of the Mercedes C-Class Estate and 490lt of the Audi A4 Avant. The car will come equipped with a 40/20/40-split rear seat and the fold-flat front passenger seat.Volvo has no problem admitting that the V60 isn't going to satisfy traditional estate buyers."From the design viewpoint the focus was on making the car as close to a coupe as possible, while retaining that handy extra space at the rear," say Örjan Sterner, head of exterior design for the new Volvo V60. "Our sports wagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car. For the customer who wants a lot of load space, there is our V70 or XC70."

Being a "sports wagon", Volvo claims the V60's handling and dynamics match those of the S60. The estate model will be offered with a choice of two chassis set ups, the standard in Europe dynamic chassis and the touring chassis. The difference between the two chassis concerns the dampers and the front and rear subframes, with the touring variant featuring a somewhat softer setting.In addition to the two standard chassis, all variants of the V60 can be specified with the optional FOUR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis, while there are also AWD versions of the V60.The V60's engine lineup mirrors that in the S60 sedan and includes a variety of petrol and diesel units. There are five gasoline units, spanning from the 150HP 1.6-liter turbo to the flagship 304HP 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six that propels the V60 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 6.6 seconds while returning a combined fuel consumption of 10.2lt/100km (23mpg US or 27.7mpg UK).

2005 Volvo V50 SV

The V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 compact near-luxury car / small family car, produced by the Swedish automaker Volvo Cars.

It is based on the Volvo P1 platform shared with the Mazda Mazda3, and the new European Ford Focus. Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group assembles the V50 at the Volvo factory in Ghent, Belgium. Volvo Cars Special Vehicle also produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (179 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Special adhesive film for Volvo C30

In Sweden, buyers of Volvo C30 can now order their cars with a special adhesive film which is applied to the exterior sheets of their cars. There are 20 designs are available for buyers ranging from wood paneling, urban panoramas, zebra stripes and hot rod flames.

Initially kept for cars used for publicity purpose, the applique film is targeted to urban trendies who are fashion conscious and wish to set themselves separate from the rest of the C30 riffraff. The appliqué film (replaceable), is not only look good, but it also helps protect the vehicle. It offers 2 years durability, after which the film can be replaced with a new film or totally removed.

When we decided to create applique films it felt perfectly natural that the C30 should be the first off the mark. This car is aimed at a fashion-conscious urban target group, people who would enjoy driving around in a car that stands out from the crowd. The decorated cars will truly be seen on the street and the adhesive film is a very good way of protecting the car’s bodywork, at the same time as it offers scope for varying the vehicle’s appearance. All told there will be 12,314 variants of the C30 to choose between. It sounds more difficult than it really is. Our site is structured such that the customer can “build” his or her own car online based on specific choices, and the result is in effect a totally unique car.

One can order Volvo C30 (personalized) using every Volvo- Dealer in Sweden. After the car has been made at the plant, an independent contractor applies the appliqué film, and then the car is sent to the customer.

Special Preview: Volvo XC60

Combining sporty design with leading edge safety features, the Volvo XC60 made its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. A 5-seat crossover SUV that clearly moves Volvo in a bold new design direction, the XC60 also benefits from all of Volvo’s safety know-how and technology.

“This is not only the safest Volvo ever. If you ask me, it’s also the most stunning. Not a bad combination, is it?” says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp. ”The new XC60 bases its unique appeal on the synthesis between daringly sporty design and a range of intelligent safety systems that help the driver avoid accidents,” explained Arp.

While the XC60 will naturally satisfy buyers seeking Volvo’s legendary safety technology, the new crossover clearly aims to attract buyers who seek style and luxury as well.

Special Preview: Volvo XC60

Volvo Design Director Steve Mattin describes the XC60 as ”the boldest crossover so far. This car is charged with more emotive form and far more energy than any previous Volvo model.”

We’re elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally turning up the visual volume. If you say that you’d recognize a Volvo from a hundred meters away today, I’d say the XC60 radiates a clear Volvo presence from at least twice that distance,” says Mattin.

Characterizing the bold styling, the Volvo badge and iron-mark in the front grille are both larger, while the Volvo name on the rear is larger as well. At the front, unique fog lights are positioned between the headlights and the grille, emphasizing the v-shape of the grille and the front fascia.

At the rear the taillights blend into the C-pillar and light up with the brake lights so that the shape of the rear shoulders are emphasized under braking.

The XC60 is packed with safety technology, but the big news is City Safety, a system designed to help a driver avoid a collision or reduce the speed of impact.

Active at speeds up to 20 mph, City Safety will pre-charge the brakes if the vehicle in front suddenly stops and City Safety determines that a collision is likely. If the driver doesn’t react, the brakes are applied automatically. At speeds below 10 mph City Safety may help avoid the collision and from 10 mph to 20 mph helps to reduce the speed before impact.

Another new safety featured being introduce on XC60 is Pre-Prepared Restraints that uses a laser sensor that interacts with other technology to control the airbags and adaptive seat belt load limiters. A further developed DSTC system is part of the XC60 safety equipment as is a new Trailer Stability Assist system.

On sale in Europe in the second half of 2008, the XC60 will initially be available with a 285-horsepower 6-cylinder turbocharged T6 engine and two five-cylinder turbodiesels, the 185-horsepower D5 and the 163-horsepower 2.4D. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with Instant Traction is standard on all versions.

Sales are expected to begin in North America early in 2009.
